SUMMARY:Midsummer 2025 - A New Era
DESCRIPTION:Tickets are now ON SALE! and they go fast… \n\n\nJoin us for another wonderful Midsummer celebration! Midsummer will take place at the Herb Lamppa Tower Civic Center on Saturday\, June 14\, 2025. \nThe music program\, “Songs of the Journey” will take place in the Lake Vermilion Cultural Center. This program\, led by Ryan Bajan\, takes guests on an adventure across the Atlantic as we present songs from the immigration to Minnesota as well as unique pieces highlighting the diversity of cultural roots in our region. \n\nSilent Auction and Cash Bar opens at 5pm\nDinner and Closing of Online Auction at 6:00pm\n\n\n\n\nEditor’s note: Ryan Bajan has been a LVCC Board member for 10 years and has served as Treasurer for much of that time. He and his wife Linda\, perform with the Sectionals octet featured in our newsletter. In addition\, they have often sung with our Midsummer Singers and the Tower Area Community Choir. The busy Bajans are parents to six children\, many of whom joined them as foster family members and were then adopted. In addition\, Ryan is a teacher of the Ojibwe language as well as other subjects at the Nett Lake School\, As we searched and questioned our patrons for a new Midsummer format after Jan Kime’s retirement\, a variety show seemed an entertaining path to take with the talented Ryan as Director.

SUMMARY:The Sectionals to Perform at the LVCC on October 17
DESCRIPTION:The Lake Vermilion Cultural Center will host The Sectionals at St. Mary’s Hall in Tower on October 17 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. The Sectionals is a group of eight singers of various ages and backgrounds from around the Iron Range. While performing together in larger ensembles the group was created around the interest of concentrated smaller vocal performance utilizing tight harmonies\, jazz-inspired music\, and the flexibility of performing in a wide array of venues across the state. They feature a piano accompaniment\, percussion\, and electric bass. \nRyan Bajan\, member of The Sectionals and treasurer of the LVCC Board said\, “their mission is to fill the audience with the joy of quality and fun vocal music by performers who love to sing”. A free will offering will be accepted and refreshments will be served following the concert. Invite your friends for what will be a fun evening! \nThis will be the tenth time since June that St. Mary’s Hall has been used for a musical performance\, art show\, educational program\, or a play. While the building is not finished the LVCC Board is gratified that it can be used for such events.  If you can’t attend\, but would like to make a donation\, just fill in the form below\, and THANK YOU!

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Easter Egg Painting Class
DESCRIPTION:Ukrainian Easter Egg coloring on Monday\, April 18 \nSOUDAN- The Lake Vermilion Cultural Center is hosting a Ukrainian Easter Egg painting class on Monday\, April 18. The class will be held at the Vermilion Park Inn in Soudan. Cost of the class is $25 which includes a soup and sandwich lunch which begins at 12 noon. The class itself runs from 1 – 5 p.m.\, and all materials will be provided. All proceeds will benefit the Lake Vermilion Cultural Center. Class size is limited to 15\, and pre-registration is required by emailing Email Mary Batinich at malexbat@gmail.com. \nThe class is being taught by John and Denise Lindquist. The couple first learned the art of Ukrainian egg decorations when they took a community education class in 1985 from Lucy Karcok\, whose eggs are displayed at the Smithsonian. Lucy has also been featured in several articles of the “Ukrainian Weekly.” Since then\, the Lindquists have enjoyed sharing how to make these beautiful eggs\, called pysanky in Ukrainian\, with friends\, family\, and many others. \nPysanky have been part of the culture of the Ukrainian people dating back to pre-Christianity. The peasants believed there was great power embodied in the egg\, so they decorated them in the spring to celebrate the renewal of nature and life. Geometrically decorated eggs with stylized animals were given to symbolize protection\, health\, fertility\, love\, bountiful harvest\, prosperity\, etc. Once Christianity arrived symbols of the church and love of God were incorporated. The dyes were derived from nature and a wax resist process was used whereby melted beeswax was applied to the egg using a kistka (copper cone for scooping beeswax which was wired to a dowel and heated by a candle flame.) If protected from sunlight\, small children\, and animals the eggs will keep for years. \n
