Sharon Legg has deep roots in our area with great-grandparents who lived in Soudan and on Duffy Island, Lake Vermilion. She is a graduate of Eveleth High School and UMD, where she received an accounting degree. She retired last year as Finance Director for the City of Coon Rapids, a position she held for 25 years. Since retiring, she has spent much of her time at her cabin on Breezy Point, Lake Vermilion. We feel her background in finance and internal control will be a great benefit to our board.

Our board was pleased last spring with the election of Attorney Don Erickson of Virginia as a member. Don practices with the firm of Fryberger, Buchanan, Smith & Frederick, P. A. of Duluth. Volunteerism is part of Don’s nature as he is well known for his pro bono work with indigent clients. Don is using his many legal skills and wisdom to help our organization. Next year’s Midsummer featuring Norway should be pleasing to Don as he has been working for some time on a book called “Growing Up Norwegian: Stories of the Second Child.”

The Soudan contingent of the Lake Vermilion Cultural Center is extremely happy to welcome Susan Ellis to our board, not only because of her many talents but because she lives so close to the office and is always willing to come and lend a hand at the last moment! She is a graduate of Blue Earth High School and Metro State University, and active in Montessori education, helping found the first Montessori High School in Minnesota.

And a fond farewell…

Louise Gately joined the LVCC Board in 2013. She focused on fundraising and other development projects. She worked on a comprehensive fundraising program and also served on the LVCC Building Committee. For several years, she chaired the successful Midsummer Auctions, which annually generated significant revenue for the LVCC. Louise now plans to focus on her volunteer activities in Des Moines, Iowa, and Delray Beach, Florida. However, she will continue advising the LVCC Board in the area of fundraising. We wish her well and look forward to working with her in the summer months.

Nancy Larson joined the LVCC Board in 2013 and served as Vice-Chair where her main focus was as our major writer for the IRRR grant and others. In addition she has advised us on development and fundraising. Upon leaving the board, Nancy has agreed to continue to serve on the Building Committee and to write grants as needed. Good luck to Nancy in her many important endeavors in our community.
